The 50-share Nifty50 index closed 0.5 per cent, or 45.95 points, lower at 8,065.80. It created an occasional of 8123.55 and a high of 8,111.75 in intraday trade by today. The S&P BSE Sensex closed 0.68 per cent, or 181.31 points, down at 26,656.83. It created an occasional of 26,878.48 and a high of 26,838.14 in intraday trade.
Vedanta and ITC were the highest losers in the BSE benchmark, which lost 6.68 and 4.3 per cent, respectively.
ICICI Bank, ITC, Kotak Mahindra Bank and L&T, which came out with their second quarter earnings, were all part of Nifty50 but didn't raise the index.
